Walking Stories

Walking StoriesAs part of our residency at the Bike Shed Theatre we’re creating Walking Stories, a project to sit alongside our own walking story, Beneath the Albion Sky. With Walking Stories we’ll be working with community groups and visitors to the Bike Shed to explore their stories and experiences of walking (both epic and seemingly insignificant).

Walking Stories will culminate in a ten minute performance inspired by the material Exeter generates, which we’ll perform before Beneath the Albion Sky on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd November. And because we’re keen to get involved with local theatre makers we’re looking for eight of you from Exeter (or the surrounding area) to come and make that ten minute performance with us.

Details of the official call out are below, and if you have any questions about Walking Stories send us an email at workshops@writebynumbers.co.uk or tweet us at @WBNtheatre. We’d like to stress that by using the term “theatre maker” we’re interested in hearing from people working in (or across) any discipline(s) which that might encompass.

Opportunity for Theatre Makers: ‘Walking Stories’

Write By Numbers are looking for Exeter based emerging theatre makers to take part in a one-day workshop devising a short curtain-raiser performance for our one-man show Beneath the Albion Sky based on stories from local communities in and around Exeter.

Write By Numbers will be gathering stories of walking from local groups and individuals; from schoolchildren to older people. This original material may be verbatim accounts, visual images, sounds or written material and will form the base material from which ‘Walking Stories’ will be developed. Applied Drama facilitator Estelle Buckridge will collate the stories, which will be gathered through workshops, discussions, photos and written submissions and she will lead a one-day creative workshop exploring these stories on Friday 1st November. The product of the workshop will be a 10 minute ‘curtain-raiser’ which presents the material provided by the local community in a performative way.  This short piece will be presented before the performances of Beneath the Albion Sky on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd November. Participating groups will be invited to attend.

We are looking for interested theatre makers to take part in this workshop and to create, present and perform the material. We are looking for a multi-disciplinary group so we encourage theatre makers with different specialisms to apply.

This is an opportunity to engage creatively with other artists and to create a high-quality performance piece from stories gathered from the local community.

You need to be excited to devise a piece in a day which may include many forms of performance including music, dance, drama, design, writing….and more.

Dates:

Friday 1st November: Devising Workshop 10am – 6pm. Performance 7pm.

Saturday 2nd November: Call 11am. Matinee 1.30pm. Evening performance 7pm.

You may be needed for an initial meeting on Tuesday 29th October (though this will be scheduled with regard to availability).

Those selected will receive £15 expenses for each of the workshop/performance days.

To apply:

Please send us a statement (no more than one side of A4) detailing why you’d like to be part of “Walking Stories”, details of previous experience and what you feel you’d be able to contribute to the project. This needs to reach us by Monday 14th October at 9.00am. Please email this to workshops@writebynumbers.co.uk.
